Oh. My. God. Artificial Intelligence just told me it is taking my job!! If Artificial Intelligence doesn’t scare you quipless*, you’re not paying attention! The photo above is AI-generated from Canva from the following query: silver-haired woman being fired. It's bold, colorful and beyond my capability to create on my own. The expression is a bit generic and there is no discerning background information from which to draw context, but all-in-all, AI created a photo for this blog with a simple wish list of what I wanted included. Below, however, is what's got me nervous!! It is the paragraph that Canva’s “Magic Write” penned for me in less than six seconds when I used it in creating a blog on Artificial Intelligence. The headline is exactly the writing prompt I gave it. Both photo and copy are stark examples of the power of AI. Six Seconds!!!! The majority of my professional career has been some form of copywriting. As a marketing professional, I’ve spent 35-plus years helping companies get their message out. I've always hired artists to design for me. It's beyond my capability to create photos like the one above. But I do know copywriting, and to generate the paragraph above, I, as a professional copy writer, would need to research hours to find, read, digest, and understand the information displayed. But more importantly, it’d take many hours of writing and rewriting to match the information I’d discovered with the needs of an audience looking specifically for a product or service. Hours and hours of work—billable hours!—reduced to six seconds. To quote the Canva AI program, “job displacement” is the first negative impact of Artificial Intelligence. People are going to lose their jobs and I know I’ll be one of them.** Will you? But let’s stop for a second and really look at the results generated by the AI search! It’s not JUST the time it took to generate this info—ironically proving the “increased productivity” point AI mentioned under positive attributes—but it is the INTENT behind the original question/query we must focus on. Negative number two calls out “bias and discrimination.” We must understand that nothing on the internet can be factually verified when it can be uploaded, combined, blended, labeled and used by others to inform, educate, inspire and sometimes to MANIPULATE AND CONTROL. When AI results are displayed, THIS is where discerning must begin! Take the search above: We must question the results of an Artificial Intelligence search. Where did this program get this information? What were its sources? Who says each of the six items listed is factually correct or a “neutral” perspective. AI above says it will be helpful when “designed and trained properly.” From whose perspective?! Is the glass half empty or half full? Are you a dreamer or a realist? There are many many ways of looking at the world. One’s perspective will make all the difference whether AI will be used to benefit or harm mankind. And it’s not just me who's concerned! Many people are sampling AI and seeing the warning signs. How scary is this? The founder of AI quit his job over concerns over Artificial Intelligence. This Google search result was displayed today, May 2, 2023. The BBC and other articles quote the cognitive psychologist and computer scientist’s concerns regarding “bad actors” doing “bad things.” He went on to call AI without proper safety measures “quite scary.” THIS is a pivotal moment for mankind. The positive impact of AI can’t be understated but at what cost? How do we use this tool for the betterment of mankind? It’s going to come down to this: whatever we focus on we manifest. We must focus on causes and projects that move people and the planet forward! What are you asking AI? How does AI help you? Who are you helping? Is your perspective kind? Does your product, service, mission serve the world? Or are you just another greedy capitalist looking for a quick way to make a buck?*** What if we could use AI to solve the world’s biggest problems…like world hunger? Hey! Let’s experiment. According to Canva’s Magic Write program: Hmph, look at that, a “multi-faceted approach” to solving the “complex issue” of “ensuring food security.” All succinctly listed in a paragraph that took seconds to generate. But it’s going to take people to implement the plan! Any plan that AI might concoct must be implemented by wo/man.
I guess my job is secure a bit longer. ;) Loquaciously, Lindee *Quipless: no snark, no puns, no speech; just utter amazement unable to be put into words or spun into good humor—or dark twisted sick humor (as humans have a habit of doing) as mental preservation. **Just like computers in the late 80s revolutionized the advertising/marketing industry: every Tom, Dick and Harry who had a computer thought he could design his own ads and craft his own strategy. ***Since we're experimenting, here are AI suggestions on how to make a buck.
